— Big Eight Conference opponents proved too tough to overcome for three Janesville Parker players in Thursday’s opening round of the WIAA state tennis tournament here at the Nielsen Indoor Tennis Stadium.

Parker’s Matt Knutson, playing Division 1 singles, was swept in straight sets by Verona’s Andrew Argall, 6-2, 6-4. Knutson, a senior, finished the season with a 17-11 record.

The Vikings’ Craig Spangler and Codi Papcke lost in Division 1 doubles, 6-1,

6-0, to Middleton’s Michael Owen and Alex Horner. Spangler and Papcke, both seniors, end the season with a 12-13 record.

“The Middleton team played very well and kind of caught our doubles team off-guard,” said Parker coach Mike Fuhrmann. “Matt (Knutson) came back and had a good second set. He was up 3-2 and lost 6-4.”

Other area athletes also failed to advance past the first round.

Fort Atkinson’s Tim Hartwick suffered only his second defeat of the season in a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Christian Phelps of Eau Claire Memorial in Division 1.

Also in Division 1, Dean Schwefel of Lake Geneva Badger lost 6-2, 6-1 to Bryan Miles of Wausau East. Badger’s doubles team of Matt Heinz and Reid Solheim lost 6-2, 6-0 to David Stockbridge and and Justin Kirtley of Homestead.

In Division 2 singles, Whitewater’s Ian Stone was defeated 6-0, 6-0 by Rishi Karri of University School. Edgerton’s doubles team of Christian Fox and Kyle Carrier lost in straight sets to Shorewood’s Jake Miller and Sawyer Carlson-Price.
