WCLO's Stan Stricker reports on fewer odors at Janesville's landfill

RSS

Janesville City Operations Director John Whitcomb says the improvements to prevent strong odors appear to be paying off.

He says the number of complaints have been radically reduced, since a new gas collection system was installed, and the edges of the landfill were sealed with clay. He says the real test is yet to come.

In the past, odors typically are the worst in the winter.

So maybe we should double the use of our landfill by out of city users and fill it up faster. That way they will have to close it and build a new multi-million dollar landfill outside of town. Wa La! Problem solved.

Or perhaps people stopped complaining because they are used to the stink and are expecting it now. I have noticed its been "reduced" but there are still days where the odor, even downtown and up Milton Ave and sometimes Milwaukee Ave, is rather pervasive. It's to the point that we are deciding whether or not we want to stay in Janesville when we start looking for another house in the next couple of years.
