The Janesville 15-year-old all-star team is sitting pretty after knocking out 23 hits and winning its first two games in the State Babe Ruth tournament at Eau Claire.

The local team defeated Marinette, 10-9, Wednesday morning and then routed Ashland, 10-4, Wednesday night.

“We’re sitting in the catbird’s seat now,” Coach Pat Campbell said.

Janesville plays Northwoods at 4 p.m. today. The game can be viewed by going to www.ifan.tv, and clicking on the Babe Ruth tournament link.

Janesville built a 7-0 lead against Marinette. Marinette rallied with three runs in the fifth and six in the sixth to take a 9-7 lead. Janesville responded with a three-run sixth, capped by Tyler Brooks’ two-run single.

Ryan Marro came in to pitch in relief of Colin Frey in the sixth inning and got the win.

Marro also picked up the victory in the victory over Ashland. He started and pitched the first five innings, striking out six. Adam Greene, who will start today’s game against Northwoods, pitched the final two scoreless innings.

Janesville had to rally from a 4-1 deficit. The local squad wiped out that deficit with a seven-run fourth inning. Tyler Campbell had a two-run single, Keaton Eichman had a two-run double and Brooks had an RBI double in the big inning.

“We’re hitting the ball right now,” Campbell said. “If we minimize the walks, and keep swinging like we are, we will be in good shape.”
