Janesville 9-year-olds win state title
That’s the battle cry for Janesville’s 9-year-old Little League tournament team.
Janesville defeated Pulaski twice on Sunday to win the Cal Ripken State Tournament title in Dodgeville.
Janesville had previously advanced to next week’s Ohio Valley Regional in Okolona, Ky., but will now enter the tournament as a top seed.
After building an 8-1 lead in Sunday’s first game, Janesville had to hang on for a 12-11 win. Dan Blomgren, Ross March, Jacob Campbell, Keaton Coulter and Nick Schuster led Janesville’s hit parade, while Ben Coulter was the winning pitcher.
An eight-run second inning proved to be the difference-maker for Janesville. March’s two-run double highlighted the inning.
In game two, Jordan Bailey pitched two scoreless innings and struck out four to pick up the win as Janesville rallied for a 10-6 win.
Blomgren, Bailey, March and Campbell were the hitting stars in game two.
“They were two exciting games today,” Janesville head coach Pat Campbell said. “Our kids did a great job throughout the tournament, and when it mattered most, came through today.
“The neat thing about our team is that all 18 kids on our roster got a hit in the state tournament. That’s pretty impressive.”
Janesville opens up play in the Ohio Valley Regional on Friday against an opponent to be determined.
Members of the state championship team are Devin Armstrong, Keaton Arreazola, Bailey, Seve Bertagnoli, Blomgren, James Brennan, Campbell, Ben Coulter, Keaton Coulter, Jacob Fieiras, Ryan Herbst, Jacob Lynch, March, Sam Nemetz, Schuster, Casey Stone, Sam Stried and Daniel Thomsen.
Coaches were Campbell, Brian Bailey, Jimmy Coulter, Joe Coulter, Vic Herbst and Dave Nemetz.
