— Rock County Coroner Jenifer Keach is challenging the nomination papers of her opponent in September’s primary election.

Keach, 1320 Elida St., Janesville, decided Friday to challenge the validity of the 500 signatures collected by her opponent, Terry L. Holder, 950 Nelson Ave., Milton.

Holder has until about 4 p.m. Monday to respond to Keach’s challenge.

The two will face off in a Democratic primary Sept. 14. The winner will be unopposed in November.

Keach was appointed coroner in 2005. She was elected to the position in 2006.

Holder is an autopsy assistant and phlebotomist at William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison.

Rock County voters also will decide in a November referendum whether they want to continue electing a coroner or have the county appoint a medical examiner.

If voters say they’d prefer to switch to a medical examiner, the change would not be effective until 2014 because Keach or Holder will be elected to a four-year term.

The county board wouldn’t have to follow the referendum’s outcome because it will be advisory and not binding.
