A Delavan Police Department squad car waits outside a home at 58 E. Walworth Ave. in Delavan Thursday. Police arrested five people in the home suspected of running a marijuana growing operation.

— Police say they removed two children and several large garbage bags of marijuana plants from a marijuana growing operation Wednesday.

Delavan police executed a search warrant at 58 E. Walworth Ave. about 7 a.m. Wednesday. Police obtained the warrant after several weeks of investigation into a possible marijuana growing operation at the house.

Police found the residence in “deplorable” condition, Chief Tim O’Neill said.

“We found rotting food and mold in places. We had to shut the power off, shut the gas off,” he said. “The building inspector and the fire inspector determined it was unfit for human habitation.”

Officers took two children, both younger than 10, to authorities at the Walworth County Health and Human Services Department, O’Neill said. They also seized several large garbage bags full of marijuana plants and stolen property connected to at least one burglary and several thefts, he said.

“It was a pretty big grow operation,” he said. “There was no question.”

Residents of the home arrested were:

-- Larry R. Lewis, 45, maintaining a drug house, possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, possession of drug paraphernalia and child neglect.

-- Colleen M. Dale Lewis, 44, maintaining a drug house, possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, possession of drug paraphernalia and child neglect.

-- David M. Guevara, 17, possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and possession of drug paraphernalia.

-- West E. Rodgers, 17, possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and possession of drug paraphernalia.

-- Jacob D. Wagner, 17, possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police consider the bust significant because of the size of the growing operation and the amount of marijuana police rook from the house, O’Neill said.

“As far as drugs go, it’s not that profound. But as far as marijuana goes, it is important,” he said.

This is unfortunate because it tarnishes the image of all the upstanding pot growing citizens who provide a clean, safe, nurturing environment for their children. (This might sound like sarcasm, but I'm serious.)

Im glad they got the kids out of a nasty situation (the conditions of the residence). If this was so bad why hasnt something been done sooner?? Thats my question, I could care less about the marijuana.

I hope they legalize or atleast decriminalize marijuana for medical use. They legalized alcohol and we see every day right on here how many DUI's or accidents that causes. But that is awhole different topic!!

Good to see some innocent kids (10 and under) getting some help.

I had a neighbor who rented. When they moved out the owner found signs of mushroom farming in plastic bins in an upstairs closet.

freeradical... I've SEEN the damage of home grown pot in such a controlled environment. OBVIOUSLY, it isn't EVERYONE who experiences damage, I'm sure. But the pics (taken by the insurance co.) I SAW of a home my brother remodeled, was disgusting. There was so much resin and mold on the ceilings, walls and wood window and door jams that they DID gut it. It was cheaper than trying to clean and repair it.

Of course you wouldn't get high from just being around it, but the "black" mold WILL make some people VERY ILL.

Don't get your undies in a wad... many of us don't give a d@m^ if they were growing pot. Its the fact that there were small children living in filth.

Nurse4U lived there years ago and said it basically should have been condemned back then! That's MY only gripe with all of this.

Sorry, kid, I don't have a memory like an elephant but I do believe you did say this. All I can say is, put these two children in foster care, please, so maybe their lifes can become good ones.

The greatest upset, no doubt, was that the house was worthless and there weren't any other good saleable assets or cash to fatten the coffers of the law enforcement folks.

You guys act like growing weed in your house is going to create a biohazard! If you people don't know what you're talking about, it's best to just not speak at all.Admittedly, this case sounds kind of nasty and sick, but it's easy to grow in a grow cabinet, closet, separate part of the house, etc. Touching it doesn't make you high, it doesn't just pop out it's own mold spores and infect a house...Some really dicey wording being used on this post,so I guess I can feel free to do the same. Some of the comments are just like...

"I wonder what the two children under the age of 10 were used for in the operation"

What?

"The plants need water and lots of watered plants will create dampness and that creates MOLD. Sorry I had to spell that out for you.
I watched a episode on HGTV. The guy comes into the home to fixed wreaked homes. It was a rental and they DESTROYED the house growing pot. Mold EVERYWHERE top to bottom. They had to GUT the house. They also converted it and hooked right into main line of power(DANGEROUS). She was on the hook for that HUGE bill too."

Well, in this case, yes. But there are temperature controlled systems, humidity, etc. I mean, it's gardening indoors, it's not difficult to do or do well and in a controlled enviroment. I'm glad HGTV is spelling out how POT just WRECKS homes, like it's a wild, invasive urban bush!(think steve irwin, blazed up). To the POINT where they actually have to GUT it?. You don't have to sound so snarky and condescending to scooter because you've-what?- watched enough HGTV to KNOW?(Not enough, apparently, to have seen any sort of functional indoor hobby garden)

"Yep the deplorable conditions are what upset people. Not the fact these children were exposed to criminals pursuing illegal activities."

Yep,that's right. Seems to be the general consensus here.Anyone want to draw any conclusions based on that?
And the illegal activity, what is it? Oh,growing plants!Sounds absolutely terrifying, doesn't it?

The children should be placed in foster homes. As for the growing, sorry kid, but this was the wrong way to do it. Kids should never be involved and in my opinion, even the 17 year olds that got busted are also kids. Pot plants do not cause mold, frogger, dampness does. We all have mold of some sort, just look in your basement very thoroughly. Living in a pig sty is in the hands of the adults. Some people should never have kids, sterilize them unless they pass a test to become parents. JMO

What? How do you get "blaming the cops for what conditions the kids were living in"? Troll!

Children are not invisible! "...after several weeks of investigation", and the neighbors would have known children were living there.

Scrap there little award winning drug bust, they should have conducted a welfare check, weeks ago!!!

LOL That is my old apartment! It was unfit to live in when I lived there, about ten years ago! I stayed in the back apartment. It had one door. The toilet overflowed whenever you flushed it. It would overflow with waste. The heat went out all the time because the furnace was broken. I reported it to the police and the landlord was issued citations for an unfit place to live.

Leaving children in that environment for so long is criminal. The marijuana would not have harmed anyone, but the cops felt harming the kids was worth having their big drug bust. When will people voice their outrage?

what?? i assume he means that because as far as 'drugs' go...marijuana is not that profound...cuz we sell harder drugs LEGALLY every day. drugs that actually kill people. what a complete waste of law enforcement resources. this should have been a child protective services case...not a law enforcement one.

Oh yeah. the two kids, they were important too! Cops more interested in the pot and grow operation and must have forgot to comment about getting the children to safety.
This is exactly the kind of abusive behavior that WILL STOP when maraijuana is re-legalized in our nation. These types of "grow operations" will be replaced by legitimate operations that pay taxes!
If You Favor Marijuana Prohibition Then You Favor Organized Crime!!!
