Janesville 14s win twice
Janesville defeated Wisconsin Heights, 8-1, and Middleton, 12-10, to open the tournament. The victories give Janesville a berth in next week’s state tournament since the top four teams at district advance to state.
Janesville starter Brandon Hughes stopped Wisconsin Heights on three hits. Hughes notched 11 strikeouts and walked just one.
“He was in command,” Janesville coach Tom Davey said. “He had a nice game.”
Hughes had two doubles and an RBI to help his cause. Ryne McKee executed a suicide squeeze that scored runners from both second and third to highlight Janesville’s four-run third inning to take a 6-1 lead.
In defeating Middleton, Janesville survived a slugfest where the teams combined for 32 hits. Janesville had 19.
Janesville plays the winner of Madison vs. Reedsburg in a semifinal at noon today.

Janesville plays Middleton at 8 a.m. today in a winners’ bracket game.
Colin Frey went the distance for Janesville to pick up the win. Frey struck out six and allowed only four hits.
Aric Bobzien paced Janesville’s offensive attack with three hits and four RBIs. Tyler Brooks, Adam Greene and Braden Perkins had two hits each for Janesville.

Janesville plays Edgerton at 9:30 this morning, with the winner clinching a berth in next week’s state tournament.
Milton cut the deficit to 6-5 in the top of the sixth, but Janesville responded with eight runs in the bottom of the inning. Janesville sent 12 batters to the plate in the sixth.
Janesville’s Kevin Brandt struck out five in five innings of work to pick up the win, while Charlie Platts went 2-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored.
