WCLO's Steve Benton reports no major riots since the state's new smoking ban went into effect

RSS

— One week into the state's new smoking ban law, it appears there have been no major uprisings.

Police officials in both Janesville and Beloit say it's been quiet, with no complaints. They also say smokers have known this day was coming for a long time so the anger has had time to simmer.

Beloit city manager, Larry Arft says the city has been busy processing the final requests from bars and taverns to build outdoor patios or decks to accommodate smokers. He says in some cases, the city has had to rezone property or sign conditional use permits, in order for the addition to meet city codes.

Watched the World Cup final in a bar on Sunday and I wasn't forced to breathe other's smoke, did not have irritated eyes and did not return home with clothing stinking of smoke. It was great.

tj... and gen...., why don't you two and your ilk vote people into office more to your liking? Then the perfidy will end, right?

If they think the first week went smooth, walk into the bathrooms of the bars and inhale. They now just smoke in the bathrooms. Wait until winter.............

Don't bother wasting money on patios or separate ventilation if it doesn't already exist. Just passing a ban won't get rid of these screaming fanatics. Once these people find gullible lawmakers and get a foot in the door, there's no stopping them. They'll be returning for the patios later to "close the loopholes". Page seven of the tobacco control handbook instructions are to ban patio smoking AFTER business owners spent thousands of dollars to build them for their smoking customers. This clearly shows that these people have ABSOLUTLY NO CONCERN for local businesses. It's the "inside-out" provision on page seven. Here's their instruction book;
