— Police have not released full details of a crash on Highway 14 Thursday involving an elderly woman and a police squad car.

Lt. Andy Long of the Walworth Police Department said officers from the villages of Darien and Walworth were trying to stop a van driven by a woman with an undisclosed medical condition at 9:50 a.m. Thursday.

The woman was southbound on Highway 14 “about halfway between” Darien and the village of Walworth at about 9:50 a.m. Thursday, when she drove her van into the front end of a village of Walworth Police Department squad car at a low speed, Long said.

The woman’s van “tapped” the squad car, causing minor damages to both vehicles, Long said.

Long said officers and the woman were uninjured in the incident, but he could not verify the woman’s age or identity or whether she was transported to a medical facility.

Long declined further comment, saying that the village of Darien Police Department and Walworth County Sheriff’s Office were handling reports and an investigation of the incident.

The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office on Friday said no records were available on the incident, and Darien Police Department on Friday did not respond to media requests for reports on the incident.

Speaking of police cars and "tapping" I heard sgt. Maltese just smashed up a squad car at his other part time job in Milton. Word is that his Chief is furious and that he will be convicted on his citation.

Okay I saw the supposed accident myself and this woman tapped the squad car because she didn't put her van into park when she stopped..the van rolled maybe 5 feet so that's why it said tap...I can tell you she was very elderly and looked confused, the story has gotten WAY to much attention she caused no harm did nothing wrong and commited no crime so move on already! No cover up but when you do not commit a crime you cannot put info in the paper really about it....There was not even a scratch on either car guys so stop with the police cover up stuff this woman was driving a mini van for peets sake not a luxury car this woman looked very frumpy too not like someone who needs a person to cover up for her or has money to make that happen...gosh you people have way to much time on your hands to assume so much about others!

Stop ignoring the elephant in the room.

Since when does the Darien Police Sgt resist showboating to the media? Or throwing other depts under the bus.

What really happened here and why is it such a secret?

OK, lifeisawheel, I am game. The current library is on the site of the previous incarnation. (Heavy remodeling where you gut the building to basically 2 walls and an elevator shaft constitutes a new building.) The previous site is the Carnegie Building which is now the Senior Center. Where was the library before that?

When was the last time you heard "tapped" used to describe an automobile and van collision? I spent a good half hour on YouTube watching Eddie VanHalen play live versions of "Eruption". ;-)

The van "tapped' the squad car? Somebody is going out of their way to minimize this incident.

I'm curious to know why the Walworth County Sheriff's Department is not handling the investigation on this one being that it happened in the county and two different municipalities are involved?

I bet there there won't be a follow-up. It sounds to me like they are doing everything they can to keep the identity of the woman out of the public record.
