McFarland boys stop streak, other scores

McFarland High tightened up the Rock Valley South boys basketball race Thursday night.


Paul Wedel’s 19 points and defensive play against Orfordville Parkview standout Nick Melton helped the Spartans beat the visiting Vikings, 63-45, dropping them to 8-2 in the South and 12-4 overall.


The loss snapped Parkview’s nine-game winning streak and cut the first-place Vikings’ lead to one game in the loss column over Walworth Big Foot (7-8, 6-3).


Wedel, who had been averaging six points a game, led McFarland (8-6, 5-4) in scoring. Brett Kaether added 14, and teammates Tyler Wedel and James Runde each had 12.


Paul Wedel made six of eight free throws in the final quarter, and the Spartans made 10 total free throws in that period to pull away.


Melton led Parkview with 16 points.

-- Big Foot 76, Evansville 64—Big Foot put a 24-12 blitz on the Blue Devils in the third quarter for a Rock Valley crossover win at Evansville.


The Chiefs (6-8, 6-3) pulled within one game of first-place Orfordville Parkview (12-4, 8-2) in the South loss column, while fell Evansville (8-6, 6-4) fell two games behind East Troy (11-3, 8-1) in the North.


Michael Walker scored eight of his game-high 25 points in the third quarter, and Alec McGreevy got eight of his 17, as the Chiefs roared 54-43 lead and never let up.


Marcus Greben added 11 points to the highest total against Evansville this season. Brian Lunde led the Blue Devils with 19 points, followed by Casey Moseley with 17 and Dylan Erickson with 10.

Rock Valley South scoring leader J.J. Panoske was held to a season-low five points for Brodhead (8-7, 5-5).

Brandon Schmidt led four East Troy players in double figure with 22, while Brett Bouwman added 19.


Kyle McGivern had 14 points to lead Palmyra-Eagle (1-13, 0-9).
