— An up-and-down season continued for Janesville Craig High School’s girls basketball team Thursday night.

Stoughton’s Brianna Bower scored 17 points, and the Vikings limited the Cougars to three points in the fourth quarter in a 54-45 nonconference victory.

Craig (7-8), which was without four players due to a violation of team rules, saw its three-game winning streak snapped that came on the heels of a five-game losing streak.

“By the end of the game, we were down to really only eight players,” Craig coach Mark Marsden said. “I think we just ran out of gas.

“But the whole group that did play, played hard. That’s all I can ask of them.”

Stoughton (4-8) led by two after three quarters, but switched to a zone defense in the fourth that caused Craig fits.

“We really had trouble scoring against the zone and shots just wouldn’t fall,” Marsden said. “And they (Stoughton) really hit the boards hard, and we just didn’t respond.”

Whitney Oliver led the Cougars with 13 points, all of which came in the first half.

Craig will play at Middleton in a Big Eight Conference game Tuesday night.
