— A fast start put visiting UW-Stevens Point ahead, and free throws brought the Pointers back in the second half as they won a critical Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night at Kachel Gym.

The Pointers scored the first nine points of the game, and then used the free-throw line to their advantage to down UW-Whitewater, 68-51.

Stevens Point, which avenged a 76-71 loss to the Warhawks on its home court in December, improved it conference-leading record to 8-2. The Pointers, ranked No. 20 in Division III, is 16-3 overall.

The Warhawks did erase the early deficit and took a 41-37 lead with 13:17 left in the game. Whitewater’s Cortney Kumerow led the 13-2 run that gave the Warhawks their four-point advantage.

But the Pointers rallied behind their free-throw shooting. Point finished with a 22-of-30 performance from the line, while Whitewater was 9 of 11.

Senior guard Nicole Bundy scored 17 points and added eight rebounds for the Warhawks. Kumerow finished with 15, and sophomore forward Chantel Burg grabbed nine rebounds.

Andrea Flease led Stevens Point with 24 points.

Whitewater hosts UW-Stout at 4 p.m. Saturday.
