— The Janesville Bluebirds thumped host Madison West 9-3 in Big Eight Conference hockey Tuesday.

Cody Stettin scored the Bluebirds’ first goal 33 seconds into the first period and the rout was on. Janesville (9-7, 7-4) rolled to a 5-1 lead.

“We’ve been fortunate to get off to a good start against West,” Janesville coach John Mauermann said. “We use our speed early and expose weaknesses on defense.

“Stettin scored between the goaltender’s legs and we were off and running in the period,” Mauermann added.

Stettin had a pair of goals in the first period and added Janesville’s sixth goal in the second period for a hat trick.

Janesville will travel to Arrowhead for a 7 p.m. game Thursday.
