No. 1 East sinks Janesville Parker boys
The Purgolders, No. 1 in the AP Division 1 state ratings and 10th in the Midwest, according to USA Today, raced a 59-27 lead over Janesville Parker in the first three quarters and went on to a 75-51 victory.
That boosted East to 14-0 for the season and kept the Purgolders two games ahead of six-time defending champion Madison Memorial at 11-0 in the Big Eight.
Nimrod Hilliard IV had 19 of his 26 points for East in the first half. University of Wisconsin football recruit Marquis Mason had nine points during the Purgolders’ 23-8 surge in the third quarter and finished with 15.
“I like the way they play,” said Parker coach Ryan Masterson, whose team fell to 1-10 in the Big Eight and 3-11 overall. “They play hard, and they do a lot of the little things. I was most impressed with their defense.”
The Purgolders used a full-court press to harass the Vikings into 23 turnovers, including 10 in the third quarter.
Parker had four turnovers in the first four minutes as East ran out to a 14-3 lead, which included 10 straight by Hilliard, and the Purgolders never looked back.
Creed Knutson’s two free throws cut the deficit to 26-13. Mason responded with a three-point play, and Arthur Adams added a three-pointer to start a 33-14 blitz.
Knutson had 15 of his 22 points in the second half to lead Parker. Tyler Teubert added 12 for the Vikings before fouling out.
“When Hilliard gets going, they are tough to beat,” Masterson added. “I do think our guys were a little bit tentative going to the basket, and that led to some of the turnovers.”
Parker will try to erase Tuesday’s loss when it hosts Madison West on Friday night.
“My guys don’t give up, and they battled down the stretch,” Masterson said. “It was just too big of a hole.
“They are a tough team. But we played better in the fourth quarter, and hopefully we can carry that over to West.”
