Blue takes over late to lift Spartans, other scores

Madison Memorial High School’s boys basketball team was forced to work overtime, but Vander Blue helped make it bright night for the Green Machine.


Blue, a Marquette University recruit, topped off a 20-point peformance with half of his team’s points in overtime to lead the Spartans past Verona, 58-52, Tuesday in a Big Eight Conference game at Memorial.


Blue’s layup also lifted Memorial into a 50-50 tie with 30 seconds left in regulation time. Each team then had one more possession, but neither could score, sending the game to overtime.


Verona started the overtime with two free throws for its only scoring in the extra period. Blue and Jamar Morris each had four points in Memorial’s eight-point overtime to seal the victory.


The Spartans, No. 4 in the AP Division 1 state ratings, improved to 12-3 overall and stayed a game behind top-ranked Madison East in the Big Eight. Verona fell to 10-4 and 7-3.

The Lancers led 32-22 at halftime and 51-38 after three quarters.


Michael Boos had 18 points to lead Sun Prairie.

The Cardinals pulled away from a 26-24 halftime edge, with Everson scoring eight points in each of the last two quarters.
