Craig girls hold off Memorial
The box score gives no clue as to which Cougar girl saved the day down the stretch in Janesville Craig’s 56-52 Big Eight Conference basketball win Saturday over Madison Memorial.
Emily Hinman, Craig High’s 6-foot junior post player, scored just two points in the second half, none in the fourth quarter, and 5-8 junior forward Ally Marshick had only two points the game.
What the box score doesn’t show is that, with 11.6 seconds left and Craig clinging to a 54-52 lead, Hinman grabbed the rebound off teammate Amanda Hamilton’s missed free throw and, while tip-toeing the base line, got a pass out to the wing to Marshick, who was fouled with 6.9 seconds left.
Marshick made both free throws, her only points of the game, to seal the win for Craig. The Cougars intercepted Memorial’s long inbounds pass as time ran out.
Hinman and Marshick may have ensured the win for Craig (7-7, 6-5), but there was a cast of characters who contributed to the Cougars’ third straight Big Eight victory.
Craig coach Mark Marsden didn’t panic when he saw slow starts again at the beginning of the game and after the second half.
“We have to challenge our starters,” Marsden said. “We’re getting into holes, and then we get into huge foul trouble.”
The difference at this point for Craig is its ability to bounce back from the deficits. And this time, the Cougars came back with Marshick on the bench.
