— With the gym seemingly splitting apart at the seams after Beloit Turner’s miracle shot, and an apparent Orfordville Parkview victory suddenly headed to overtime, senior standout Nick Melton had a simple message for his Viking teammates.

“As soon as they got into the huddle, they sat down,” Parkview coach Paul Saevre said of his Vikings. “Nick said, ‘We’re OK. Everything’s gonna be all right. We’ve got four minutes to play now.’ ”

In the end, Melton backed up his cool headedness with nine of his game-high 38 points in overtime as the Vikings prevailed, 81-78, in a scintillating Rock Valley South thriller.

“That was special to be a part of,” Saevre said. “You hate to see a team lose. They hit some gutsy shots.’’

Enough to make a high school senior’s heart skip a beat.

“No,” said Melton, who added eight rebounds and eight assists to his highlight reel performance, when asked if he has ever played a game like this.

“Hopefully, never again. But when you win, it makes it worth it,” Melton added.

Parkview, which maintained a two-game lead in the Rock Valley South at 7-1 and 11-3 overall, also got big games Kyle Woodworth (20 points, 11 rebounds) and Jamie Wichser (11 rebounds). The Vikings led almost the entire game, including 50-42 after three quarters.

That’s when things got downright crazy.

The Trojans (9-4, 5-4) began the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run and got within 50-49 on a three-pointer by A.J. Bernstein, one of seven threes Turner made in the fourth quarter and overtime.

From there, the game was a relentless series of punches and counterpunches, with Turner finally getting even at 64-64 on a putback by Aaron Jones (22 points, 11 rebounds) with 2:01 left.

After several possessions, including a loose-ball scramble that must’ve lasted 10 seconds, Wichser drilled two free throws to give Parkview a 69-66 lead with seven seconds left.

With 2.4 seconds left, the Trojans needed a miracle and got it when Adam Mikkelson inbounded the ball to Dan Schliesmann. Schliesmann fired up a bomb from the deep left wing that found nothing but net as the buzzer sounded ending regulation.

But Melton hit a pull-up three from the wing and two pull-up jumpers in overtime to give Parkview a 78-72 lead.

Somehow, Turner tied it again at 78-78 before the Trojans missed two game-tying threes in the final seconds. That came after a free throw by Wichser and two by Melton gave Parkview its winning margin.
