Janesville Craig gymnasts on mark

Becky Schneider won three events and the all-around to lead Janesville Craig past host Madison West, 135.675-123.125, in Big Eight Conference gymnastics Thursday night.

Schneider earned an all-around score of 35.8 to help the Cougars go to 2-1 in the Big Eight.

“I thought our girls came out very strong,” Craig coach Jean Welch said. “It was our best score of the year. We’ve been adding more difficulty to our routines, and we hit them tonight.”

Sara Ennocenti finished second to Schneider in the all-around with a 33.95 total.

Schneider, Ennocenti, Ashley Pohlman and Ashley McGoey each had their highest point total of the season for the Cougars, who will participate in the Purgolder Invitational at Madison East on Saturday.

-- Middleton 137.0, Parker 128.75—The defending Big Eight champion Cardinals won three of four events to slip past the host Vikings.

Erika Whitson won two events for Parker, which suffered its first conference loss in falling to 3-1.

“We’re consistent, but Middleton was just a little bit better tonight,” Parker coach Cathy Lehmann said.

Whitson, a junior, won the floor exercise with a score of 9.50 and tied for the all-around title with Middleton Claire Slickeinger with a score of 35.125.

With exams next week, Parker is off until Wednesday, Jan. 27, when it will host Janesville Craig.
