— For the second time this season, the Janesville Bluebirds fell apart in the third period against Verona.

The host Wildcats scored four goals in the third period Tuesday night in rallying past the Bluebirds, 6-1.

Janesville (8-5, 4-2) dropped out of first place in the Big Eight Conference with the loss.

“You can’t let up at all in hockey, and we did that a couple times tonight and it cost us,” Janesville coach John Mauermann said.

“We’re playing hard, and all I’ve asked of the kids is to get us to the third period each game with a chance to win. And they’ve done that.”

Cody Stitten gave Janesville’s high school co-op team a 1-0 lead just 21 seconds into the game on an assist from Ron Lindgren.

Janesville will play at first-place Middleton (5-0) on Thursday night.
