Comets rally late, still fall by one

Delavan-Darien couldn’t take advantage of its larceny in the final minute and lost to visiting Westosha Central, 56-55, in Southern Lakes Conference boys basketball Tuesday night.


The Comets rallied from a 41-33 deficit after three quarters to tie it at 48-48. Delavan-Darien was trailing by a point when it stole the ball on two consecutive Westosha possessions with less than 40 seconds left. Both times the Comets (4-5, 1-4) gave the ball right back on turnovers.


The Comets’ Tyler Butke scored all 16 of his points in the second half after sitting out much of the first half with two fouls.


Central improved to 2-3 in the conference and 2-8 overall.

The Elks trailed 36-27 after three quarters and were buried 16-9 in the fourth quarter.

Beau Steffens scored 20 points, and teammate Tommy Vaccaro added 17 for the Wolverines. Chris Nelson scored 13 points and Grant Dull added 11 for the Panthers (2-8, 0-4).
