Whitson breaks record in Westosha gymnastics tournament
Erika Whitson stole the show in the Falcon Invitational gymnastics meet Saturday at Westosha Central High School.
The Janesville Parker junior broke the meet record on the floor exercise to highlight the day for Janesville gymnasts.
Janesville Craig, led by Becky Schneider, finished sixth in the 12-team field with a score of 133.0. Parker was eighth with 127.45, while the co-op team of Franklin/Muskego/Whitnall won with a score of 140.70.
Whitson, Parker’s first-ever state qualifier in the all-around, scored a 9.65 on the floor exercise to break the previous record of 9.6 set by Jazz Essman of Burlington/Badger/Wilmot in 2007.
“Erika is such a perfectionist when she competes, and today, she was almost perfect on floor,” Parker coach Cathy Lehmann said. “Halfway through her routine she had a smile on her face, and if you knew Erika, that’s rare. That told you all you needed to know about her routine.”
Schneider was second on vault and fifth in the all-around to lead the Cougars.
“This is such a competitive meet that we use it kind of like a tuneup for the sectional meet,” Craig coach Jean Welch said. “There will be a lot of state place-winners that come out this meet.
“I was pretty pleased with the way we performed against such good competition.”
