Madison Memorial High School did what it had to do to hold off Beloit Memorial in Big Eight boys basketball Friday night at Barkin Arena.


The visiting Spartans missed a pair of 1-and-1 free-throw attempts in the final minute, but they still were able to pull out a 45-40 victory over the Purple Knights.


That keep the six-time defending conference champions (8-2, 5-1) a game behind Madison East (9-0, 6-0) as they head into a showdown with the Purgolders at home tonight.


Vander Blue, who finished with 10 points, hit a basket to put the Spartans up 42-39 with less than a minute to go, and Beloit (6-3, 4-2) could not get any closer.


Beloit missed five of its six free throws in the first half, which ended with the Spartans up 27-18.


Tre Creamer led the Spartans with 15 points, while Jamar Morris added 10.

n East 52, Sun Prairie 45—Madison East (9-0, 6-0) kept its edge in the Big Eight race by dropping Sun Prairie (8-2, 4-2) from a second-place tie.


The Purgolders trailed 31-27 at the half, but they pounded Sun Prairie 14-3 in the third quarter to take the lead for good, 41-34, heading into the final period. Nimrod Hilliard IV scored 12 of his game-high 19 points in the third quarter to spark East.


Marquis Mason added 16 points for East. Chris Hawkinson scored 14 points and Michael Boos added 13 to lead Sun Prairie.

Jon Dybevik scored a game-high 18 points for La Follette, and teammate Maher Hakim had 15.
