The Badger women end a long losing streak to Purdue

RSS

— A 12-0 run to start the second half was more than enough to carry the University of Wisconsin women’s basketball team to a key Big Ten Conference victory Thursday night at the Kohl Center.

After trailing by three at halftime, the Badgers came out with a 20-4 run en route to a 64-51 win over Purdue.

Wisconsin (12-4, 2-3) snapped a 13-game losing streak against Purdue (7-8, 2-2) in beating the Boilermakers for the first time since 2001.

Alyssa Karel led four Badgers in double figures with a game-high 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting. It was her fifth 20-point outing in the last seven games.

Tara Steinbauer of the Badgers recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and a season-high 13 rebounds, while teammates Rae Lin D’Alie added 11 points and Lin Zastrow had 10. It was the third time this season UW had four players score in double figures.

Wisconsin, which entered the game leading the Big Ten in scoring defense, limited an opponent to fewer than 60 points for the 13th time this season. Purdue’s 51 points tied its second lowest output of the season.

Purdue shot a season-low 30.6 percent (15-of-49) on field-goal attempts but stayed in contention with 17-of-18 shooting from the free-throw line. Brittany Rayburn led the Boilermakers with 13 points.

Wisconsin will be at home against Sunday for a 1 p.m. game against Michigan.
