The Janesville Bluebirds are in first place in the Big Eight Conference.

Joe Allen had three goals and three assists to spark the Bluebirds to an 8-1 victory over Memorial (1-4, 3-8-1) in Madison. Janesville is 5-1 with 10 points in the Big Eight and 7-4 overall, despite losing several key seniors from last year’s squad.

“It was an outstanding team effort,” Janesville coach John Mauermann said.

Allen got the Bluebirds off to a fast start when he combined with Ryan Shelton for a short-handed goal just 3:19 into the game.

“Ryan made a nice pass, and Joe one-timed it into the net,” Mauermann said. “Anytime you can get a short-handed goal, it’s a big energy boost.”

Tanner Woodman and Cody Stettin each scored their first career goals later in the game.

Freshman Tyler Lewis made 17 saves for the Bluebirds.

“Our defensemen were moving the puck well,” Mauermann said.

The Bluebirds play at Beloit Memorial at 8 p.m. Saturday.
