A lot of factors go in to deciding whether local schools will have a snow day. Van Galder Bus Company helps the school district make the decision.

Van Galder employees drive the rural roads at around 3:00 a.m. on a potential snow day to see if the roads are clear enough for the buses.

School bus manager Nancy Sonntag says there are certain rural areas where drivers will not drive down the roads when it is snowing and drifting.

She says the drivers set up pre-arranged pick up points for some rural areas or they contact the parents to provide transportation.
