Warhawks shake Clarke College

UW-Whitewater shook off a pesky Clarke College with a 16-5 run to open the second half en route to an 82-53 nonconference women’s basketball victory on Wednesday at Whitewater.


Clarke (3-14) gave the No. 19 ranked Warhawks a tussel in the first half, battling to a 33-33 tie.


But it was all Whitewater in the second half as the Warhawks held the Crusaders to 20 points.


Cortney Kumerow went 8 for 9 from the field to score a game-high 16 points for Whitewater. Nicole Bundy added 15 points, Heidi Sonntag followed with 14 and Meg Theune chipped in 10.


The Warhawks (10-3) will open the WIAC season hosting UW-River Falls at 5 p.m. this Saturday.

n Lakeland 59, Beloit 41—The Muskies buried the Buccaneers 30-14 in the first half to post a nonconference victory.


Beloit (3-7) made just six of 20 field goal attempts in the first half. The Bucs finished the game shooting almost 28 percent (13 of 47).


Amanda Moore and Sarah Stariha scored 10 points apiece for Beloit.
