JANESVILLE There’s always room for more music, comedy and drama.
That’s the thinking behind the newly organized Bower City Theatre Company.
The company announced its presence by sending out audition announcements for its first show, “Jesus Christ Superstar.”
According to its Web site, bowercitytheatre.org, the company is “a nonprofit regional theatre company that brings together professional and non-professional artists to engage, inspire, entertain and challenge audiences with theatrical productions that range from the classics to new works.”
It also will provide another revenue stream for the Janesville Performing Arts Center (JPAC), said Sue Conley, one of Bower City’s founders.
Conley is on the arts center’s board. Local attorney Jim Thorpe, who helped organize the new theater company, is an ex-officio JPAC board member.
Bower City hopes to put on two shows a year: A musical and possibly some “straight plays,” Conley said.
JPAC is already home to two theater companies, Theatre Unlimited and Janesville Little Theatre. In addition, independent groups working with the school district, JPAC or other entities have put on musical performances or plays at the center.
“JPAC is there to provide a home for performing arts,” Conley said. “We thought there was room for another performing arts group.”
Bower City has applied for non-profit status.
Jim Tropp, who formerly worked with Theatre Unlimited and the Armory, has been hired as the artistic director for “Jesus Christ Superstar.”
Tropp runs Wisconsin Theatreworks in Beloit and is active in local high school productions.
He plans to continue doing both.
Tropp previously directed Jesus Christ Superstar for Theatre Unlimited.

I believe in the truth, which oftentimes is inconvenient when it conflicts with ignorant delusions that benefit no one, save for in a masturbatory way. Any "negativity" you perceive is due to that conflict and your resistance to it.

Sure. Whatever you say. LOL
Keep on with your negative spewing. It really fits with what you profess to believe in.

Not anger, just inconvenient truth, and I only need one account to express it.

How many names do you actually use verbalistgazettefan? Oh sorry, I mean't inconvenienttruth. You change your name but your angry rhetoric remains the same.
I do hope you are able to conquer your demons in this New Year. Good luck.

An interestingly unsubstantiated opinion, BostonBill, whereas your own words show definitively how utterly blissful you are. Your level of blissfulness prevented you from registering that fact, apparently.
.
"The community is in a rut and if the people living in it would just show some positive maybe the world would look a little brighter all the way around."
.
Look no further than Bill, Carlito; he's already living in the ignorant bliss you've just advocated.
The community is not just in an economic rut, but a cultural rut. Should we blithely deny both realities, pretending it isn't so by obligingly "supporting" the rut instead? Things do tend to look brighter when you're in denial.

Good comment carlitiosway.
And couchsit, Equus, indeed. I think there is something about some Janesville people (or the people who decide what hits the boards here) that has them believing they are being short-changed if the actors don't burst into song and dance.
There is a whole wealth of non-musical ("straight") drama to choose from -and probably nowhere near the expense of the overdone musicals -royalties. Bower City Theatre should trust that the Janesville area has an untapped audience for the likes of
Tennessee Williams
Eugene O'Neill
David Mamet
Harold Pinter
Arthur Miller
and many more. Enough with the show tunes!!!

instead of complaining and posting negative why not try and support something for a change!!!!! The community is in a rut and if the people living in it would just show some positive maybe the world would look a little brighter all the way around.

I played Jesus a few years ago when Theatre Unlimited did this show. Great experience. Since then I've performed primarily at The Armory, but I've been sad to watch the Janesville community theatre scene regress a little. I'm really hopeful that this new group will get the turnout at auditions that they're hoping for. I'd like to believe that there still are people interested in being a part of and supporting community theatre in Janesville.

BostonBill's "attempt at culture" = unthinking acceptance of repetition that oversaturates an already bland, struggling market. Ignorance truly is bliss.
Be "positive"!

The timing of this new group seems odd. We the economy being in the shape it's in, wouldn't you think more effort would go into supporting the current theatre groups in Janesville? Theatre Unlimited is currently doing musicals, Janesville Little Theatre is doing "straight " plays. You also have UW Rock County with some fine productions, add in all the high school & middle school productions and you have many opportunities to see good thetare. There are only so many people that can afford to support the groups. They have now taken the limited entertainment dollors & stretched them thinner. I know that Theatre Unlimited has lowered their ticket prices to $12 for their production of "Fiddler on the Roof" in order to help people afford to come to the show. What will ticket prices be for this new group? $20? I wish them luck.

.
It's great that there are groups of people who want to share and express their love of the arts with other performers and the public at large, but it's not a "thriving arts scene" just to be able to claim new groups...those new groups have to supply new offerings, as well. The Bower City Company claims they want to "engage, inspire, entertain and challenge audiences," but this was a poor choice to show they were serious about delivering on that intent.

Why would you see Jesus Christ Superstar twice in three years time? I know there's musicals out there that everyone heard about that janesville has not hosted.

It's tough to do stuff nobody's ever heard of, but if you go with name recognition you have a chance of filling the seats. Same as any business -- gotta pay the bills first.
