— Frito-Lay in Beloit was one of eight Wisconsin companies to receive 2009 Wisconsin Manufacturer of the Year Awards for outstanding achievements in manufacturing.

The winning companies were announced Thursday in Milwaukee.

Frito-Lay won a Grand Award in the sustainability category.

The program, now in its 22nd year, recognizes Wisconsin companies that demonstrate a commitment to business excellence, which has a positive impact on the company and the state, making Wisconsin a better place to live, work and play.

“Frito-Lay has an attitude of continuous improvement,” said Bob Karnauskas, president of BL3 Strategies in Milwaukee and one of 15 judges. “Their sustainable business practices illustrate their view that whatever they have done in terms of their sustainable initiatives is not good enough and they will keep driving forward to be even better.”

Frito-Lay reduced its landfill contributions by 37 percent last year.

Through the company’s use of technology best practices, including high efficiency lighting, Frito-Lay’s electrical consumption was down 26 percent per pound of finished product.

And through technology investments in its packaging department, it was able to minimize the transport of product, and avoid more than 368 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year.

The company’s Beloit facility opened in 1973 on 15 acres of land with fewer than 300 employees.

The plant now tops 500,000 square feet, and it employs more than 700.

I could see Kerry advising its newcomer employees not to buy/rent in certain neighborhoods, but not the entire city. If they disliked the city so much, why would they move their USA headquarters there?
.
wtp, Janesville did much to diversify its workforce as auto employment declined. You have to understand that no matter how hard they work, landing big employers is very difficult (as in nearly impossible). There aren't that many opportunities and you have to have what they want in the first place to even be considered. The long run for Janesville is continuing to grow its smaller and medium-sized businesses into more successful ones, just like the reality for America overall is finding job growth in those sectors.
.
Beloit, of course, was also lucky in having Ken Hendricks, who did so much for the city and brought companies to Beloit by snapping his fingers (buying them, or other means). Janesville has a relationship with the Hendricks family but not a great one, and nobody of his caliber.

Nice, how a positive article about something in Beloit has to again turned into a Janesville vs. Beloit thing. Face it, both cities have good things AND bad things to offer. And we wonder how/why the rivialry continues to live on year after year after year.....

Joze, are you bored, too? You should join poobah on a different article, you'd get along good. Who knows? I was born and raised on the southside of Janesville and it is MY OPINION that it is still the best part of town. No heavy traffic like the eastside and compared to being snobby on the eastside, I would rather live where I do!!!!

Janesvilles south side has too many rundown properties (commercial and residential) much like parts of Beloit.
-
Janesville does a much better job then Beloit in tearing these properties down. If you want to feel that the truth is an insult feel free
justme46 but I do not feel that wtp has a shred of common sense. Like Janesville makes GM's business decisions? Kook Coo Cook Koo! If anything they game them a road to no where as my good buddy bobbo1951 would say.

And now we come to cynicaleye's accusations. Any proof besides you heard it from a friend who.........*rolls eyes*

Joze, was this a big cut on the southside...."Janesville could do good by tearing down much of the South side but there again it offers the diversity that you claim it lacks." I beg your pardon? The southside of Janesville is the best part of Janesville in my opinion and a lot of others opinions. And as for diversity, the whole town is diverse, not just the southside which is a wonderful thing. JMO

wtp: Here's one negative result of Beloit's helping businesses. After all the city did for Kerry to keep them in town, when Kerry brings in new employees, they tell them to live somewhere other than Beloit. So no home sales, no local shopping, no additional revenue. Nice slap in the face. Thanks Kerry.

It figures that the only thing doing well in Wisconsin is a crap factory. And, yes, I am a hypocrite. I buy their products.

Honestly WTP?
-
There are many thing's I don't like about Janesville, Beloit, You or myself for that matter.
-
In 1973 no one knew that the snack chip industry was set to explode. Janesville certainly understands diversity and why it isn't the ghost town that many assumed it would become. Sure Janesville could do good by tearing down much of the South side but there again it offers the diversity that you claim it lacks.

Step away from the keyboard! Sir do you have a license to operate that thing?

Doesn't it surprise everyone how aggressive Beloit is vs Janesville. The city fathers of Beloit did not just sit back and say everything will work out when they lost there big companies. In the mean time Janesville city fathers just sat back and kept watching GM slowly die over the years and made no effort to try and bring in large companies like Frito Lay. That tells everyone that Janesville is a bedroom city and they are lazy. The people of Janesvllle is cheap and keep pushing the city fathers not to spend any money that would raise there taxes on finding ways to bring companies to Janesville.
