Rhonda Costilla

— A Fort Atkinson woman is in custody at the Rock County Jail after being accused of attempting to rob a woman 30 years her senior.

Rhonda M. Costilla, 35, N1739 Riggert Road, Fort Atkinson was arrested at 10:50 p.m. Monday at home by Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies on a charge of attempted robbery, according to a Janesville Police Department news release.

The arrest relates to an incident at 9:02 p.m. Monday, when the 65-year-old victim was loading her groceries into her car in the Woodman’s parking lot, 2819 N. Lexington Drive, Janesville.

Costilla allegedly approached the victim who was on a mobility scooter, grabbed her purse and tried to flee.

But the victim fought back, and in doing so, knocked her assailant to the ground.

Costilla continued to pull at the victim’s purse while on the ground.

The victim kicked the suspect and pulled her hair, all while yelling for help.

Several people, including Woodman’s employees, heard the victim’s shouts and came to her aid.

Costilla fled, but witnesses were able to provide the police with a license plate number for her vehicle.

The victim didn’t receive any serious injuries.

And she kept her purse.

"Besides, most gun advocates talk tough but would end up wetting themselves if actually confronted by someone with a gun.
Not necessarily. I would fight back. And you really can't say that putting more guns on the streets would be worse. Like I said, I lived in Arizona for 10 years and I did not see anymore crime where I had lived than here. Maybe less because people who are apt to commit a crime would think twice than to approach you, not knowing if you're carrying or not.

Sorry, janesvillecomments, I'm not buying your tired old argument. First, you are basing your theory on faulty evidence (probably from the NRA). Secondly, individuals who feel the need to commit a crime will do so whether you pass a gun law or not. You really believe purse snatchers and the like are thinking clearly? Enhanced drug/alcohol treatment programs, more effective rehabilitation of both violent and non-violent offenders and better increased follow-up would do more to decrease these types of crimes than putting more guns out on the streets. The death penalty does not deter anyone from committing a crime. Putting more guns on the streets will only lead to more violence, not less. That woman who was mugged most likely would have had her own gun used against her. A person stands a much better chance surviving a broken bone than a gunshot wound.
Besides, most gun advocates talk tough but would end up wetting themselves if actually confronted by someone with a gun.

Thank goodness this lady wasn't hurt any worse than she was. Thank you so much to the people who helped her and to Janesville PD for doing their job. This lady is very special to me. And yes she does look younger than the woman who tried to rob her. I know this because--SHE IS MY SISTER

jterry1955: I totally agree with you. I lived in Arizona for 10 years and you are allowed to carry a weapon. With the way things are so out of control now, we should have the right to protect ourselves. And GOOD FOR YOU! to the older lady in the wheel chair!

PanamaRed - We should be allowed to defend OUR rights against those who would take them away. Did you skip class the day the teacher covered "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness?" A license to carry a concealed firearm is not a license to kill. It is a limited permission to be able to take drastic measures to protect your life under drastic circumstances.

When you are 65 years old, being knocked to the ground, especially when the "ground" is a paved parking lot, can result in broken bones, torn muscles or ligaments and injured joints, in addition to painful bruising. If the victim survives the mugging, they still have the problems of obtaining medical treatment, possible long term physical and/or psychological therapy, and worrying about medical bills and insurance. I might even vote for Obama if his health care reform successfully included a national concealed carry permit law to reduce health care costs. ☺

You are partially (and inadvertently, I assume) correct when you mention the bad guys will stop stealing. In states where a concealed carry laws are passed, the violent crime rate goes down and the property crime rate goes up. Criminals engage in fewer assaults and robberies and switch to burglaries. Perhaps you would enjoy the social interaction with a criminal while being mugged victim, but most of us would prefer to be angry at the crooks because they broke into our homes and stole our televisions and power tools, rather than be angry and injured, or dead, because they attacked us in the parking lot for the cash and credit cards we might carry.

If someone is willing to mug a senior citizen to steal her purse, they should be forfeiting their guarantee of a second chance. If you want to hand them your purse and get on your hands and knees so a mugger can kick you in the face without pulling a hamstring, that is your right. I would prefer to have the right to pull out a revolver and shoot the mugger to protect myself and all the future victims the mugger might assault until the law caught up with them, or an illegally armed little old lady surprised them.

We should have the right to execute anyone we believe is violating our rights. What do we need a court for. If someone tries stealing your purse or wallet just shoot them dead! Whether its a purse snatching or premeditated murder the offender should pay with their life. No second chances, no shot at redemption make one mistake and you're dead. Sounds like a great idea.
-
But wait, then won't all the bad guys know all the good guys will be packing heat? So I guess all the bad guys will quit stealing and trying to hurt other people and crime will end. But then again maybe all the bad guys will simply start carrying guns. Plus since the bad guys figure there is a good chance their victim will kill them, it would be far better to kill the victim then go sit in jail for a few years once the police catch up with them. Wow you gun advocates are geniuses!!!

while i dont advocate for other illegal drugs...the reasoning is absolutely the same. we (should)allow responsible tax paying american citizens the right to do their own persons as they see fit...as long as it intrudes on no one elses personal freedoms. personal freedom to choose is what this country was founded on. to deny some, or any of those personal freedom choices is by no means 'the american way'.

i love the people, and there are many, who complain about the govt trying to take over health care and eliminating their option to choose and then turn around and blast me for my beliefs on marijuana...as if its ok for me to not have a choice but 'woe is them' if the govt tries to infringe on their personal rights...3 words fo those peeps....

thekid3477: This could be your lucky day! I feel myself crawling toward your side of the marijuana issue. The problem is that with the way my brain (reasoning) works, I also see us adults having the right to use other drugs that are currently illegal. I may need to find the middle of the road before I am lost completely.

good job amending beliefs based on new info sarah. all adults should have that right. i hope you finally fall off the fence and realize the same reasons we should allow adults the option to carry a weapon are the same logical reasons we should allow adults who choose to smoke marijuana a safe and legal way to secure it.

After rereading this article and the posted comments, something has happened inside of me and I now support every adult's right to carry a gun. (God, help me, I've gone over to the dark side and I might never get back.) And, yes, I am totally serious about carrying a gun.

How about allowing senior citizens to carry concealed weapons in Wisconsin? Even the cradle-to-grave anti-gun socialists in the state legislature would have to admit that if someone reaches the age of 65 without acquiring a criminal record, they aren't likely to join the lawless wild-west rampaging mobs like Minnesota or Indiana or Iowa or Missouri or Michigan suffered when they started allowing their law-abiding citizens to obtain concealed carry permits.

I'd even contribute money to a fund to help arm and pay for licensing classes and fees for low-income senior citizens to defend themselves.

How about it, you candidates planning on running for Governor to replace Doyle when he cuts and runs at the end of his current term? States like Utah and Florida are raking in money hand-over-fist issuing "permission" to people who want to exercise what our county's Founding Fathers considered such a natural right that they didn't even put it in the original Constitution. Do any of you candidates have the political courage to sign a bill that would allow senior citizens to carry something more effective than a fistful of car keys or a hat pin to use to protect themselves from muggers?
