Purple Knights gain No. 1 seed
Beloit Memorial High School has a heads-up in its bid for a second straight trip to the boys WIAA Division 1 state basketball tournament.
The Purple Knights (13-8), who share third place in the Big Eight, have received the No. 1 seed in the sectional they will host.
That means a first-round regional bye for Beloit on Tuesday, March 2, in the sectionalís upper bracket and chance to reach the state tournament without leaving Barkin Arena.
The Knightsí tournament bid will begin at home on Saturday, March 6, in regional final against as sixth-seeded Lake Geneva Badger (6-15) or ninth-seeded Janesville Parker (5-16).
Parkerís tournament opener against Badger will be Tuesday, March 2, in a regional semifinal game at Lake Geneva.
Janesville Craig, with an 0-20 record, is the last seed in the 14-team sectional. That puts the Cougars in the sectionalís lower bracket for a March 2 regional opener at Burlington (14-7), the Southern Lakes Conferenceís second-place team. The winner faces sixth-seeded Elkhorn (9-11) or 11th-seeded Kenosha Tremper (6-14) in the regional finals.
Verona (14-7), which has lost twice to Beloit, heads the sectionalís lower bracket as the sectionalís No. 2 seed. The Wildcats also get a first-round bye and draw No. 7 Westosha Central (7-13) or No. 10 Oregon (5-15) in the regional finals.
If the highest seeds advance, Beloit would play fourth-seeded Kenosha Bradford (13-8) in the first sectional semifinal game on Friday, March 12, at Barkin Arena. The second game would match Verona against Burlington.
The Saturday, March 13, sectional final winner advances to the March 18-20 state tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison.
In the other area Division 1 field, third-ranked Madison East (19-2) and defending state champion Madison Memorial (17-4) are the No. 1 and 2 seeds, respectively, in opposite brackets of the Middleton Sectional.
Delavan-Darien (13-8) has received a No. 1 seed in the Wilmot Regional that pairs into the lower bracket of the Division 2 sectional at Waunakee. Monroe (16-5), which won that sectional the last three years, is a No. 1 regional seed in the upper bracket.
