Milton Red Hawks cool Comets, other scores

Milton High School cooled off streaking Delavan-Darien with a 51-45 victory in a makeup nonconference boys basketball game Monday at Milton.


The Red Hawks (5-16) made nine of 13 free throws down the final stretch to snap the Comets’ six-game winning streak.


Nate Hammon sank a three-point basket, his only basket, with 2 minutes, 10 seconds remaining to give Milton the lead for good. The Red Hawks’ free throws protected its lead the rest of the way.


Tyler Butke scored a game-high 18 points for the Comets (12-8), while teammate Justin Fowlkes added 15 points. Sam McCann scored 16 points for Milton, while Mitch Trewyn added 13 points and Brandon Knudtson had 11.

The Chiefs can claim at least a tie for the title by beating Clinton at home Friday night.


Steve Dowden scored 21 points in leading Big Foot past Palmyra-Eagle. Michael Walker added 16 points, while teammates Marcus Greben and Alec McGreevy added 14 apiece.


Shane Houk scored 12 points for the Panthers (1-20, 0-15).
