Council votes to hire ice arena consultant
The Janesville City Council voted Monday to spend no more than $10,000 on consultants to study the needs of a new ice arena. Several council members said it would be a good investment before potentially spending millions on a new arena.
The council also voted to extend a private group's fundraising deadline for the project. The group will be able to review the consultants' findings before proceeding with the fundraising. Nearly $690,000 has been raised by private donations, but $1.5 million was needed by the March 1 deadline if the city was expected to contribute $2.5 million to the project.

Hank - I would have paid money to see you outside talking to a building. The next time you talk to the YMCA let me know.

Spark- I don't think there is a clear picture of who does and who doesn't want a new ice arena. Or who does or doesn't want the old arena repaired. The blog is just a way for people to give their personal opinion about a given subject. Granted there are those that use the blogs to extreme. You are correct in saying the majority here is not the majority of Janesville. Even a referendum only reflects those that will take the time to vote on the issue.

Just curious. Where do you guys get our information that the majority doesn't want it? Are you basing it off of the opinions on this website? Or the polls on this website? Either way, both are a small minority. I actually know many that want the arena and they don't even use it. They just don't participate on this website and the useless, biased polls that everyone thinks if 60% say no the entire city voted. Ha. Ya, 60 some thousand people are using the gazette poles.

We've seen this in the past: that is, a consultant is hired to make the case that the expenditure is worth it. It's phase 1 of ramming something through against the public will. Do a referendum, and if the ice arena is voted on by the citizens, then go ahead with it.

The majority does NOT want the ice arena and yet they are going to spend $10,000 on a consultant to build it anyway? What is wrong with this city? Could the poor management be the reason things are not getting any better for Janesville? I know it's one of the reasons my family is moving out! Imagine...an ice arena a few people want and a city CANNOT afford...then spend thousands more it CANNOT afford to bring someone in for an opionion? What a bunch of idiots!
