Craig boys' rally comes up short against West
After a gutsy comeback, a Craig High rally fell short, and Madison West escaped with a 73-67 victory.
Craig, which fell to 0-17 in the Big Eight and 0-20 overall, had several chances to win, but the Cougars could not stay with the Regents (4-17, 4-13) after tying the game at 53-53.
“I thought we stepped it up tonight,” said Craig coach Mike Miller. “We took some charges, didn’t get some calls, and that was the difference.”
Several close calls went against the Cougars, but Miller didn’t highlight them as key factors.
“That’s how basketball works,” he said. “Sometimes things don’t go your way, and unfortunately, this year close games haven’t gone our way.
“But our kids continue to battle,” he said. “They knocked down shots, and they did everything I wanted them to.”
A big difference for West was 6-3 senior John Harth, who led all scorers with 29 points and stepped up when the game got close.
Miller was aware of Harth’s ability but knew West had other players who could fill in.
“We knew he was a very good player, and we toyed with the box–and-one (defense) to contain him,” Miller said. “But against Sun Prairie, Harth only scored four, but Antonio Golden and Anthony Irby each had 20, so we were a little nervous.
“They have a lot of guys who can put the ball in the hoop.”
Craig had its share of scorers. Bret Bates lit up the Cougar gym with six three-point goals on his way to a 26-point night. Cody Dare and Evan Holznecht each added 10 points.
Craig takes a breather from Big Eight play on Tuesday with a non-conference game at Stoughton. The Cougars end the regular season with a Big Eight game Thursday at Verona.
“We’re that close,” Miller said. “We’re on the brink of getting some success, and these kids need it.”
