UW-Rock men advance, women eliminated
UW-Rock County battled in the second half to turn back UW-Marathon, 72-68, in the second round of the Wisconsin Collegiate Conference tournament Wednesday in Wausau.
The victory advanced the Rattlers (19-7) into the Wisconsin Junior College Athletic Association final four on Saturday and Sunday at UW-Waukesha. The Rattlers’ first oppenent will be determined today.
UW-Rock led 50-37 at the half, but was held to nine points in the first 11 minutes of the second half and trailed by six.
With three minutes remaining, Gabe Mitchell hit a three-point basket to put the Rattlers ahead by four. The game see-sawed until Mitchell sank a pair of free throws with 30 seconds remaining for the final outcome.
Mitchell scored 20 of his game-high 34 points in the second half. Keifer Carey added 11 points, while Lance Hulbert and Fred Stewart chipped in 10 points apiece. Stewart grabbed 20 rebounds.

UW-Rock women eliminated
UW-Rock County went down swinging, losing 62-59 to UW-Richland in overtime in a Wisconsin Collegiate Conference women’s basketball tournament opener Wednesday at Richland Center.
The Rattlers erased a 32-18 first-half deficit with a 36-22 second-half rally. Kelsey Truttman scored all nine of her points on three three-point baskets, while Tiffany Draeving and Ashley Oldenburg scored 10 points each.
Draeving sank a free throw with eight seconds remaining to put the game into overtime.
Richland gained an 8-5 advantage in the OT for the victory. The Rattlers (6-18) had a three-point attempt that would have put the game in a second overtime fall off the rim.
Draeving, from Orfordville Parkview, finished with a game-high 18 points. Oldenburg, also from Parkview, scored 15 points. Nicole Skillman, from Janesville Craig, added 11 points and 10 rebounds. Each player fouled out.
