— It may be meaningless consolation, but Wauwatosa co-op goalie Matt Ranta earned the respect of Janesville Bluebird coach John Mauermann.

Unfortunately for Randa, respect is all he had left after the Bluebirds ended Wauwatosa’s season with a dominating 6-2 WIAA regional semifinal victory here Tuesday evening.

Six Janesville players posted goals on an impressive 58 shots to propel Janesville (12-11) into the regional finals against Milwaukee Marquette on Friday evening.

Despite the aggressive attack from his team, Mauermann was more impressed with Ranta’s 52 saves.

“We knew the goaltender was going to do a good job for them (Wauwatosa),” Mauermann said. “And actually, Ranta may be better than advertised. He balanced well, handled rebounds well, and knew what was coming at him coming off the walls. It was really a treat to watch him play.”

Nevertheless, Janesville managed to sneak two goals past Ranta in the first period. Owen Ahlstrom got the Bluebirds rolling with a goal at 2:27 of the first period. Ryan Shelton later picked up a loose puck in from of the net and guided a shot past Ranta at 6:46 of the first.

But a two-goal lead wasn’t enough to impress Mauermann.

“We weren’t very aggressive in the first period and didn’t play very physical,” he said. “We still have to play within our limitations, which demands we go in the corners and battle regardless of how small or big we are.”

Janesville followed its coach’s lead in the second, outshooting the Wild 15-1 en route to a 4-0 lead. Michael McCrone chipped in a power play goal, while DJ Mussey posted in a short-hander late in the period.

The Wild cut the lead in half in the third behind a pair of goals from Steve Dahl at 8:22 and 11:25.

But the Bluebirds stopped the momentum behind goals from Cody Iverson and Sean MacDougall at 13:39 and 14:38, respectively.

“We had the chance to go out and make some mistakes, but continue to improve upon the things we want our kids to do,” Mauermann said. “We got a chance to work hard because they never gave up.”
