GENEVA TOWNSHIP Gene Decker and Larry Kulik sit on opposite sides of the fence when it comes to spending money on emergency services in Geneva Township.
Decker believes the town must work cooperatively with neighboring municipalities to improve emergency coverage.
Kulik thinks the town should not start on capital projects, such as a satellite fire station, in tough economic times.
Voters on Tuesday picked Decker and Kulik, both new to town politics, to compete for a seat on the Geneva Town Board in April. James Pody was eliminated.
Decker said the town should follow up on a recent study that suggests the towns of Geneva and Linn and the village of Williams Bay work together to provide fire and rescue services in the area. He said the town could pursue an agreement with Mercy Walworth Hospital and Medical Center, which is expanding to include an intensive care unit.
“It seems to me if they were to provide ambulance service … it would make sense,” he said.
Kulik said the town must not spend money on unnecessary projects, including a proposed joint fire station. He said the town instead should work with the town of Linn and the city of Lake Geneva to form a joint fire district.
“We’re stuck with what we have,” he said. “We’re going to have to tighten the belt and make do with what we have like everybody else.”
