— Delavan-Darien’s wrestling team came up short Tuesday night in its bid for a berth in the Division 2 State Team Tournament.

But with only one senior in the lineup, the future is bright for the Comets.

Leading 17-15, River Valley won by pin in three consecutive weight classes en route to a 40-34 win over the Comets in a semifinal match of the Wisconsin Dells Team Sectional. Lodi defeated River Valley, 49-22, in the title match to earn a berth in the state team tournament.

Delavan-Darien, which was forced to wrestle without 119-pounder and regional champion Jeff Myers, who went home sick from school Tuesday, made a late push behind wins from Marcus Hudson (135), Kiefer Bennett (140) and Kyndle Bennett. But a 40-19 deficit proved too tough to overcome.

“We had a chance to score a couple more points in some matches, but we didn’t,” Delavan-Darien coach Craig Lodahl said. “But not having Jeff in the lineup really hurt us. We were forced to move some kids around.

“And hopefully, for those kids that are coming back, this will leave a bitter taste in their mouths. When it’s the middle of summer and they don’t feel like lifting or working out, they’ll remember what this feels like and how close we came.”

Other Delavan-Darien winners were Lukus Dittner (125), John Benzon (152), Paul Holden (189) and Reed Wuttke (285).
