WCLO's Steve Benton reports on a U.W. Whitewater professor's experience in a Haiti as the January 12th earthquake hit

RSS

— A U.W. Whitewater Art Professor plans to return to Haiti next year to help in the reconstruction effort.

Professor Bill Chandler was in Haiti January 12th when the seven magnitude quake hit. He was with the Haiti Lutheran Mission Society donating his time, working on several projects.

Chandler says he was standing outside his hotel, with a friend, as the ground began to shake. The shaking knocked his friend over, while Chandler was able to grab a nearby tree. The hotel was not seriously damaged but Chandler says other structures nearby weren't so lucky. He says the remains of one three story building stood only about six feet tall after the quake.

Chandler tells WCLO's Stan Milam Show he not only wants to help rebuild Haiti, but also wants to create art work that reflects the quake experience.
