— The Janesville Jets’ chase for a second-place finish in the NAHL North Division took a detour Friday night.

Despite leading by a goal after two periods, the Jets saw the visiting Alpena IceDiggers score three unanswered goals in third period to secure a 5-3 win at the Janesville Ice Skating Center.

With Janesville’s loss, and Marquette’s 4-2 win over Motor City, the Jets are now five points behind the Rangers for second place.

Rui Encarnaceo had a goal and an assist for Janesville, while 2009 Janesville Parker graduate Ross Mauermann finished with two assists.

Game two of the three-game series is at 7 tonight. The third game is at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Encarnaceo signs

with Connecticut

Rui Encarnaceo signed a nationl letter of intent Wednesday to play hockey for the University of Connecticut next season, becoming the first Janesville Jet player to sign with a Division I school.

UConn plays in the Atlantic Hockey Association Conference.

In 39 games this season, Encarnaceo leads the Jets in scoring with 22 goals and 16 assists. Encarnaceo, who is from White Plains, New York, will finish the season with the Jets.
