Edgerton's 3s lead to first-place tie, other scores

Edgerton High’s girls basketball team did more than pull off an upset this time.


The hot-shooting Crimson Tide drilled eight three-point goals Thursday night and rolled into a tie for the Rock Valley North lead by knocking off first-place McFarland, 52-44.


Edgerton jumped ahead of Jefferson (7-4) and tied McFarland for the top spot by improving to 7-3 in the conference—a record that includes victories over three of the other four top teams in the Rock Valley’s two divisions.


Brooke Ferrell and Haley Fritz each hit two of Edgerton’s five three-point goals in a 23-11 second quarter that gave the Tide a 29-16 halftime lead. Meggie Schmidt’s three-point goal put Edgerton up 38-20 with 2:52 left in the third quarter.


McFarland came roaring back, however, and got within 47-44 on a three-point play by Kaitlyn Eversoll with 1:18 left in the game. Ferrell’s two free throws then made it 49-44 with 1:07 left, and Schmidt made three of four free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.


Schmidt wound up as the game leader with 15 points, while Ferrell and Fritz added 11 apiece. Eversoll and Caitlin Alsmo each had 11 to pace McFarland.

-- Whitewater 50, Jefferson 44—Whitewater (6-9, 6-5) built a 24-10 lead in the first half and held on to hand Jefferson (9-6, 7-4) its fourth straight loss in less than a week.


Kelsey Harms made 10 free throws for visiting Whitewater, including nine in the fourth quarter, as the Whippets prevented the Eagles from regaining first place in the Rock Valley North.


Jefferson got back within four points in the fourth quarter, but that was a close as it got.


Julia Shelbourn led Whitewater with 18 points, and Harms finished with 12.


Rock Valley scoring leader Jessica Splittgerber was held to one field goal, but she made 17 free throws in leading Jefferson with 19 points.

Aftrer team trailed by two points at halftime, Schultz scored nine points in the third quarter as Clinton outscored the Trojans 22-3.


Olivia Nickel added 10 points for Clinton. Megan Grover led Turner with 15.
