Warhawk women close in on Pointers

LA CROSSE — UW-Whitewater shook off pesky UW-La Crosse for a hard-fought 69-64 victory in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball here Wednesday.

The win moved the Warhawks within a half-game of conference-leading UW-Stevens Point.

The Pointers (9-3) lost at home to UW-Stout, 90-76,

The Warhawks (15-5, 8-3) trailed 32-24 at the half and struggled in the second half, but gained a 45-32 second-half advantage for the victory.

La Crosse opened a 52-41 lead with nearly 11 minutes remaining, but Whitewater cut the deficit to 58-52.

The Eagles had 7½-minute scoreless stretch as Whitewater went on an 11-0 run to take a 63-58 lead. La Crosse cut the gap to 63-62 but could draw no closer.
