UW-Whitewater moves into first
WHITEWATER UW-Whitewater took a half-game lead over UW-Stevens Point in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference by beating visiting UW-La Crosse, 67-52, Wednesday night.
Coach Pat Miller’s Warhawks improved to 9-2 in the WIAC. Stevens Point (9-3)lost to UW-Stout, 69-67, at Menomonie to fall into second.
The Warhawks put together a pair of first-half runs to roll past the Eagles.
The Warhawks (17-3) used 10-0 and 10-2 runs to gain a 32-26 halftime lead. Whitewater made 20 of 24 free throws to keep the Eagles (14-7, 6-6) from being a threat.
Whitewater shot just 41 percent for the game, making 19 of 60 field-goal attempts, including 3 for 15 from three-point range.
Dustin Mitchell scored 21 points and Dupree Fletcher added 12 for Whitewater. Tony Mane finished with a game-high 24 points for La Crosse.
The No. 6 ranked Warhawks play at UW-River Falls Saturday.
