Former Janesville video store could be Japanese steakhouse by spring

The Milton ave. site of the former Premiere Video store is scheduled to become a Japanese restaurant later this spring.
JANESVILLE An Arkansas restaurateur with operations in several states will open Fuji Japanese Steakhouse in Janesville in May.
Dave Piao said he hopes to start remodeling the building at 2235 Milton Ave. in the next few weeks.
The property, owned by Sara Investment Real Estate, is the former home of Premiere Video.
“We chose Janesville because we think the community needs this type of restaurant,” Piao said. “We looked at the population, the incomes and we think it should do well at this location.”
Fuji Japanese Steakhouse will feature hibachi grills and serve sushi, he said.
Guests will sit around 14 grill areas where chefs cook, often with a theatrical flair, Piao said. Trained chefs from other locations will be move to Janesville to run the restaurant.
The restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. Lunches will average $8 to $9, while dinners will be about $15, he said.
The restaurant plans to have a full bar and is going through the permitting process. Piao said he hopes to open in May.
“We’re excited,” said Ryon Savasta of Sara Investment. “Any time you can bring a new business to the area, that’s a good thing, particularly given the recent trends of business relocations out of the area.
“We have a business relationship with the operator, and part of the process is looking at the financials and taking a look at the plans. It’s expensive for us to have a failure.”

...and therein lies the irony of censorship. The consequence being, many of the remaining comments now read as though they were written by a hoard of heavily medicated traffic light windshield washers. (I shall adopt this as my official example of the lose-lose scenario.)

Just a guess on the gazette's reasoning, but how many web sites do you comment on that let you crap on the staff or moderators? It's bad for business, and usually way off topic. I'm wondering why this even needs to be explained.

Good point, foolonthehill. The very thought of sauerkraut and chocolate milk takes me back to when me and my girlfriend, Harriet Hoover, would go to Skuzzy's on my Suzuki 150 and split an order of kraut and choc with a side of pickled rhubarb after tuning my transistor radio to the harpsichord marathon on that FM station from Footville.

Holy crud! Only in Janesville could a restaurant story create so many comments. I've never seen so many places to eat, and all of them packed on a regular basis. Must still be a lot of disposable income in the area. I'm old fashioned. I pick my own steaks and grill them myself at home. I make my own pizza - usually superior to most take-out stuff.

vatoloco- La Esquienta(sp?)
Downtown- (on)Milwaukee and High (I think). Not real busy. You cannot have Margarita but they usually have beer and Mikes Hard Margaritas that are tasty. Food is good, large portions, tasty, affordable. Service sometimes is not so good because I believe it is the owners daughters that wait on you. They are not very attentive. You can watch Mexican soaps. I cannot understand what they are saying. My Spanish isn't that good. You do know you are watching a soap though ;)
They also have a Mexican Grocery store in there.
I have heard the one by JPAC is good to but I haven't tried it yet.
I prefer EL Jardin as well. They have Margarita specials BUT it is not the same as when you pay full price. The one by Home Depot is good too but they don't put lettuce on your stuff like El Jardin does. I like Veggies on my stuff.
I have not tried the new Mexican place on Milwaukee street out by Pontiac yet.

redder- What is weird is one of those waitstaff has been there over 20 years. So, so so- bad service will never change!
I don't understand the places that only take cash either. You can get a machine just for checks to be sure the funds are there for a very small fee. May have to change the sign then! Large for $8.99 to Large for $9.45!
Saams pizza is okay if it is hot. Once it cools it changes to cardboard and gag on all the cheese.
They do have the best stuffed though!
Vatoloco- Dominoes- better but Jims STILL best!
royo- Ponderosa- all the food you can eat till you puke(yuk) for $6. There are many buffets in town I don't think.
Ever watch Las Vegas when Delinda added a buffet. It was gross to see those people eat. $6 is still a good deal. You don't need to GORGE yourself and act like you haven't eaten EVER! The only other big one is Country Buffet. YUK.

It might be ok, we'll probably try it. Hopefully they do a good job fixing that place so it has a nice atmosphere. Janesville needs Panera, Chipotle & Red Lobster. No more mexican, burgers or fast food. We eat out quite a bit - Red Robin, Olive Garden & TRH consistently have good service. The Speakeasy is great. Now that's a good restaurant! We will not order from Sam's again. Pizza isn't all that great anyway but their check policy is RIDICULOUS. Unprofessional & just plain rude. Not everyone is a serial check bouncer! Applebees food has gone way downhill & the place is dumpy looking. Last time we were there I couldn't eat my entree it was nasty. We heard management at Prime Quarter is ordering older meat at discounted prices in order to keep open - that place isn't going to last much longer with the economy & competition at TRH. What is the deal with Ponderosa?! Can't believe that place is still open. UNREAL.

PBRMan, my point was just the cost of dinner alone at JMK Nippon's. You may enjoy the "back roads" down to Rockford, the peacefulness is much more appreciating, less stressful. Some of us don't have that luxury of going twice in a lifetime.... you know, more important things than an overpriced meal. Sure, I've been there, but we had to save for a couple years to be able to afford it with paying for my parents... $200 in one pop for a meal for four? Just think what that could buy you if you just learned how to do it yourself.... OR make friends with someone that can cook like that over a grill!!!

I have a few suggestions for Gazettefan’s restaurant.
Gazettefan would be the head chef of course. His specialty would be crow and humble pie which he loves to dish out but won’t partake of himself, at least not voluntarily.
DiGriz should be the sous chef and Darwin1 should be the head waiter. That show would be worth the price of admission alone.
Prounion would be the whine steward. He could sneer at the inferiority of any Christian patrons who won’t debate with him about what to drink while slipping poison into their entrees to test their God. Of course he’d run the risk of testing one of those nominal Christians that Gazettefan likes to hang out with which cold result in severe legal problems.
But Gazettefan won’t need an accountant since he can prove that there is no one to which he will ever have to account to.
On the menu there could be an inscription that reads, “Eat Drink and be Merry (at reasonable prices) for Tomorrow We Die”.
And then there should be an inscription over the entryway that reads, “Abandon Hope, All Ye That Enter Here. We Have!”

Macdaddy - Prime Quarter is not a "Great" Steakhouse in any way shape or form...It may be good but certainly not great. When I think of a Great steak dinner I think of places out of town, not the Prime Quarter. There Steak is OK at best and the interior needs serious updating. This new Hibachi style will be a nice change for the area. It is not just a steakhouse, people will go there for a different type of atmosphere that they can not currently get in this town.

I don't understand why Red Lobster cannot be supported here. It isn't any more pricey than Apple Bees! They have some things around $10 and some around $15 and if you want to get crazy you can spend $20 or more! Just like anywhere else here. (Apple Bees, Ground round, Famous Daves, Armory, Speakeasy).
Basics sushi is good too. I couldn't do the Eal though . Ick I gave it away. I did try it before giving it away just to be sure. Could.t do it.
Macdaddy-I agree Prime Quarter is very good steak. The problem is you have to cook it yourself. I know you can have them cook it. It is very casual and no FLARE. Like a special potato and vegetable, special appetizers, very special deserts, special service (it is fine but it isn't very hard either). It is just a casual night out. Some people prefer fancy with their excellent steak. They prefer and experience not just a plate clear and keep the drinks coming.

DiGriz - The Roadhouse has been here for a pretty long time already and the popularity has not worn off yet and I doubt it will. I personally am not a huge fan of the place but it is always packed but it is not always a long wait.
I can not wait for the new Hibachi place to open JMK is one of my favorite places to eat but like PBR man said it can get expensive with the drive and the tolls and the drinks. Janesville needs a place like this right now there is no place to eat in this town that is "different," everything has basically the same food.
I sometimes make the comment to my wife that if one of those food network show were to come to town to check out a cool place to eat they would have nowhere to go, the best option would be Prime Quarter but that is not saying much. All that is, is a slightly better cut of meat than you can pick up at a grocery store.
