Two records fell Thursday night when Janesville Parker defeated Madison Memorial, 136.475-121.375, in a Big Eight Conference gymnastics meet at Parker.

The Vikings, 2-0 in the Big Eight, set a team meet record with the 136.475.

In addition, freshman Hailey Leisten set a school record with a 9.15 score that won the vault. Leisten’s score broke the old mark of 9.10 set by Beth Bohler in 2007.

Parker’s Erika Whitson won the balance beam (9.00) and finished second to Memorial’s Caroline Smith in the all-around.

Freshman Rylee Jonuska was second in the vault and third in both the balance beam and floor exercise to finish third in the all-around.

Coach Cathy Lehmann had put setting a team scoring record on the list of goals for the season, and was delighted it came this early in the season.

“And it will get better,” Lehmann said. “We’re still young, and we’re still learning.”

Lehmann said the Vikings had three of the top four finishers in the vault, and Parker’s Meredith and Emily Mauermann tied for fifth.

“That just shows how tight the competition is among our athletes,” she said.

The Vikings will compete in a nonconference meet at Elkhorn starting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
