— A former Brodhead Spanish teacher was ordered to pay a fine after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled substance.

Katherine L. Mielke, 31, Edgerton, appeared in Rock County Court on Tuesday for a plea and sentencing hearing. Two felony charges of possession of narcotic drugs were dismissed.

Mielke must pay a $576 fine by Feb. 17.

Mielke was arrested after investigators stopped her vehicle at Highway 11 and Roherty Road east of Footville, Rock County sheriff's officials said after her arrest. Mielke was accused of possessing heroin, oxycodone and hydrocodone.

The Rock County Special Investigations Unit had been investigating Mielke for several weeks after receiving a tip she was involved in drug activity, officials said after the arrest.

Mielke was suspended from teaching after her arrest. She taught high school and eighth-grade Spanish. She started teaching in the district in 2004.
