— Itís that time of year.

As traditional as the holiday season, local competition in the annual National Elks Hoop Shoot contest is about to tip off.

Boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 13, as of April 1, 2011, will compete Sunday at the Janesville Athletic Club, 1301 Black Bridge Rd.

The event is sponsored by the Janesville Elks Lodge #254. There is no charge or advance registration.

There will be three age divisons, with boys and girls competing separately. The 8/9-year-olds are at noon, 10-11 at 1 p.m., and 12/13 at 2 p.m.

The 8-9 boys and girls will shoot from four feet in front of the regulation free-throw line, using a 28.5 youth basketball. The 10-11 and 11-12 girls also will use the 28.5 ball.

Winners of each boys and girls division qualify for the Jan. 9 district competition in Beloit. Winners at each level advance through state, national regional and national contests, with travel and lodging expenses paid by the Elks.

Members of the Janesville Craig High School freshman boys basketball team will assist in the local competition.

For more information, contact Doug Heenen at (608) 756-2478 or call the local Elks Club at (608) 752-2342.
