New site chosen for Janesville skate park
The Janesville City Council decides on a location for a skate park.
Plans for a skate park in Janesville have been in the works for about five years. The subject of a location was, once again, before the city council Monday night. The project's promoter, Roger Streich, shared his frustration with the council's indecision. Streich still likes the original site proposed, and later denied, in Palmer Park. Council members like Yuri Rashkin also appear frustrated by the lack of progress on the issue, and in fundraising by the private group. Streich says it's tough raising money without a legitimate site.
Monday night the council sat down to consider Monterey Park as a site, but after concerns about design challenges, a high water table, and too many geese, the council began talking about yet another site. Council member Russ Steeber finally, successfully, designated city land on Jackson street. Council members did direct city staff to work more closely with Streich's group on design and fundraising ideas.
To date, only $40,000 has been raised privately toward a $250,000 dollar goal.
