— Janesville Parker’s girls gymnastics team narrowly missed winning the talented Craig Invitational on Saturday.

The Vikings finished with 135.125 points to finish second in the eight-team field behind the Kenosha Bradford/Tremper co-op team, which finished with 135.425. Host Janesville Craig was third with 130.925.

Parker, behind Erika Whitson’s first-place finish on balance beam, won seven individual medals in the four events, plus the all-around.

“This was absolutely a huge day for us,” Parker coach Cathy Lehmann said. “There is a lot of talent at this meet, and to come that close to winning the whole thing is pretty special.

“The most important thing for us is that every gymnast that competed today contributed to our team score.”

Whitson, a senior, won the beam with a score of 9.2, and was second in the all-around and third on floor exercise. Parker freshman Hailey Leisten was fifth on uneven bars, sixth on vault and fifth in the all-around.

Craig’s Sara Ennocenti led the Cougars with a second-place finish on vault.

“Our girls had a pretty good day overall,” Craig coach Jean Welch said. “The beam kind of did us in today, but that happens sometimes.

“We had some girls throw in some new stuff today, and they did very well.”

Whitewater’s Kim Stonewerth won the vault with a 9.25, Milton’s Carleigh Felstead won the uneven bars with a score of 9.175, and Elkhorn’s Alli Phillips tied for first on floor exercise with a score of 9.4.
