Janesville Craig’s boys swim program has never had much success against Madison East.

That changed in a big way Friday night.

The Cougars, thanks to wins in 10 of 11 events, coasted past the Purgolders 122-48 in a Big Eight Conference dual meet. Craig High (2-1) also beat Madison La Follette, 128-42, as part of a triple dual in the Cougar pool.

Tyler Meinders and Alex Loftus won two events each for Craig, while Jacob Canik, Troy Thornton and Jimmy Loftus each won an event.

“It was a great team effort,” Craig High coach Brian Kitzman said. “East has had our number for awhile now, so to beat them is something that got our team, especially the seniors, pretty excited.

“I also don’t think a Craig team has ever won two dual meets the same night, so that was pretty cool, too.”

The Cougars will compete in the Parker Relays today.

Parker ties, loses

Janesville Parker’s boys swimming team tied Sun Prairie, 85-85, and lost to Madison West, 129-41, in a Big Eight meet at Parker on Friday.

Coach Eric Rhodes praised the performances of Tom Dvorak, who won the 100 butterfly in 58.94; Brandon Jackson, who finished third in the 500 freestyle in 2:06.84, and all three of the Viking relay teams.

But Rhodes did note a weakness that his team must overcome.

“We have a serious problem with mental toughness,” Rhodes said. “Some of them just don’t have to guts to let it all hang out, and go fort it.”

Rhodes will look for improvement when the Vikings host the Parker Swim Relays starting at 11 a.m. today.
