Sara Ennocenti picked up where she left off last season, and Janesville Craig High School’s girls gymnastics team opened the season with a major victory in the Cougars’ gym Thursday night.

Ennocenti, the defending WIAA state champion in the vault, posted 9.05 score to win her event as the Cougars rolled up a 131.575-125.05 triumph over Middleton’s three-time defending Big Eight champions.

Middleton’s Libby Torresani won each of the other events, but Craig’s depth paid off in the team victory. Ennocenti also had second-place finishes in floor exercise and all-round to help lead the way to a special triumph.

“No, I wasn’t expecting that,” Craig coach Jean Welch said. “They weren’t at full strength, but neither were we, and it was a good first-meet test.

“We got our first-meet jitters out of the way, and we had a good score. So we’re pleased about that.”

The Cougars will be back in action at 11 a.m. Saturday when they host the Craig Invitational. It will include Janesville Parker, Elkhorn, Milton, Whitewater, Kenosha co-op, Mount Horeb and Westosha Central.
